Here's a short guide on how to deal with mold, moisture, and their impact on your property.
Hidden Mold:
If you notice a moldy smell in a building but cannot locate the source, or if you're aware of water damage and people are experiencing health issues, there may be hidden mold. Mold can be concealed behind drywall, wallpaper, or paneling, on the top of ceiling tiles, under carpets and pads, and other places. Additionally, mold may be present in areas surrounding pipes with leaks or condensation, behind furniture where condensation forms, in ductwork, and in roof materials above ceiling tiles due to insufficient insulation or roof leaks.
Molds are present in the natural environment and serve a purpose by decomposing dead organic matter like fallen leaves and trees. However, indoor mold growth must be prevented. Mold reproduces through tiny spores that can't be seen by the naked eye and can be found both outdoors and indoors. When wet surfaces are present, mold spores can lead to indoor growth. Though there are various types of mold, none can thrive without moisture.
When mold spores land on a wet or damp spot and starts growing, they can become a health hazard. Molds can produce allergens, irritants, and even toxic substances like mycotoxins. People sensitive to mold may experience allergic reactions when inhaling or touching mold or mold spores. These reactions can include hay fever-like symptoms, such as sneezing, a runny nose, red eyes, and skin rashes.
It is common for individuals to experience allergic reactions to mold, which can manifest immediately or after some time. Those with asthma who are allergic to mold can also experience asthma attacks due to mold exposure. Furthermore, molds can irritate the eyes, skin, nose, throat, and lungs of mold-allergic and non-allergic individuals. While inhaling mold may not typically result in other symptoms besides allergic and irritant types, ongoing research is being conducted to understand the health effects of mold better.
Unfortunately, completely eradicating all mold and spores indoors is not possible. Mold spores are present in the air and dust within a household. However, mold will not grow without moisture. To prevent or control mold growth indoors, it's important to manage moisture levels. If mold growth is present, cleaning it up and addressing the underlying water problem is necessary. Neglecting to fix the water problem after cleaning up the mold will likely result in the mold issue reoccurring.
